Low-Loss Nano-Scale Optical Confinement Of Hybrid Plasmonic Mode Induced By Gold Coated Nano-Needle

Abstract
A novel design for the hybridization ofplasmonic and photonicmodes in a silicon based nanophotonicwaveguide is proposed. The hybrid mode with low-loss and nano-scale optical confinement is induced by a gold-coated nano-needle. A propagation length of 10-mm with the propagation loss of 0.4 dB/mm and mode area of 0.0307m2are reported. The hybridization of optical and plasmonic modes through nano-needle (with reduced surface area of the gold) provides us the low loss with nano confinement. The proposed design can be considered as a nano-photonic coupler which can be useful in realizing on-chip coupling for a nano-laser and other nanophotonic devices.
