THEUSE OF ARTİFİCİALINTELLİGENCE İN SOCİAL SCİENCE RESEARCH: OPPORTUNİTİES AND THREATS
Abstract
The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into social science research has opened unprecedented possibilities for data analysis, pattern recognition, and predictive modeling. AI tools now allow researchers to process vast and complex datasets, generate insights from unstructured data (such as texts, images, and social media), and even simulate social behaviors in virtual environments. These innovations enhance both the speed and scope of empirical inquiry, offering new methodological frontiers in disciplines ranging from sociology to political science, education to communication.
However, this technological leap also introduces significant epistemological and ethical challenges. Issues such as algorithmic bias, data privacy, transparency, and the potential deskilling of critical human interpretation raise crucial questions about the validity and responsibility of AI-assisted research. Moreover, the risk of reinforcing existing social inequalities through opaque AI systems demands careful scrutiny.
This keynote will explore both the opportunities and the threats of using AI in social science contexts, and will propose a critical framework for responsible and reflexive adoption of these tools in academic research.
