Paper Title
Does Emotional Competence Matter? Exploring The Effects of Interpreters’ Emotional Competence on Tourists’ Consequences
Abstract
The interpreter is the most direct and effective way to satisfy the needs of the tourist. Apart from interpretation ability, it is worth paying attention to the effect of the interpreter’s emotionalcompetence on tourists’ experiences and behaviors. The purpose of this study was from a tourist perspective to examine the relationship between the interpreter’s emotional competence, tourist satisfaction, and tourist citizenship behavior, and also to verify the mediating effect of tourist satisfaction. This study collected 529 valid questionnaires and applied structural equation modeling to analyze the data. The result shows that (1) the emotional competence of the interpreter positively affects tourist satisfaction and their citizenship behavior. (2) Tourist satisfaction positively affects their citizenship behavior. (3) Tourist satisfaction was also found to mediate the relationship between the other two variables. The influence of the emotionalcompetence of the interpreter on tourists’ citizenship behavior is mediated through tourist satisfaction. This study concludes that tourist satisfaction andtheir citizenship behavior can be strengthened with enhancement of the emotionalcompetence of interpreters (e.g., course training, others’ experience sharing, etc.).Improving tourist satisfaction (i.e., enhancing service quality) will stimulate them to perform the extra-role behavior. The results of the study could be used as a reference for the recreation administration on interpretation service.
