Oriental Punk: Stylistic Innovation in Mythological Animated Films

Abstract
Against the backdrop of the need for innovative styles in animated films, in order to explore the value of the "Oriental Punk" style, taking *New Gods: Nezha Reborn* as an example, this paper analyzes the construction of its style from the aspects of naming logic and audio-visual expression. It is proposed that this style has blazed a new trail for domestic mythological animated films and provides a reference for animation creators. In recent years, Chinese animated films have actively explored the storytelling potential of mythological themes, focusing on the rebellious characters such as the Monkey King and Nezha. Successively, films that achieved both commercial success and critical acclaim, such as *Monkey King: Hero Is Back* (2015) and *Nezha: The Devil Child Makes Havoc in the Sea* (2025), have been created. Relying on the creative ideas of continuing and rewriting based on "new legends" and "new myths", Light Chaser Animation has been constantly exploring various possibilities for the nationalization, modernization, and internationalization of Chinese animated films. Among them, *New Gods: Nezha Reborn* (2021) (hereinafter referred to as *Nezha Reborn*) has created a brand-new Nezha story, established the "Oriental Punk" style, and opened up new ideas for the adaptation of animated films based on mythological themes. Given that the existing research on "Oriental Punk" still needs to be further deepened, this article takes the film *Nezha Reborn* as an example, and attempts to analyze the stylistic features of "Oriental Punk" from the perspectives of naming logic, visual codes, and auditory imagination, and to explore the new creative directions of domestic mythological animated films.
