LEVERAGING LEARNER PERCEPTIONS TO ENHANCE ARABIC LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION: A PRACTICAL APPROACH
Abstract
Understanding student perceptions is pivotal for developing effective language instruction strategies. This study examines insights from learners’ initial experiences with Arabic, focusing on their one-word descriptions of the language collected via Mentimeter. Keywords such as “beautiful,” “complex,” and “challenging” were analysed and categorized into thematic clusters, including aesthetic appreciation, intellectual curiosity, and perceived linguistic difficulty. These themes were then used to inform innovative teaching strategies for non-Arabic speakers. The research applies these insights to design interactive, learner-centered activities aligned with the first three weeks of a beginner-level Arabic language module. Activities such as Arabic calligraphy exercises, conversational role-plays, and grammar puzzles are proposed to address learners’ needs while fostering engagement and confidence. These methods aim to transform perceptions of Arabic from an intimidating challenge to an accessible and enriching linguistic pursuit. Key Words: Arabic, Motivation in education, language-Study and learning, foreign language learning This paper highlights the importance of incorporating student feedback into curriculum design, demonstrating how data-driven insights can bridge gaps in instruction and enhance learner outcomes. By focusing on practical applications rather than theoretical frameworks, this research offers actionable strategies for educators seeking to improve their teaching methodologies. The findings underscore the potential of learner perceptions as a valuable resource in language education and advocate for a student-centered approach in fostering both linguistic competence and cultural appreciation. This study provides a replicable model for integrating learner insights into pedagogical practices, contributing to the broader discourse on effective language instruction for diverse learners.
