Sugarcane Bagasse Torrefaction for Unused Renewable Fuel Plant Design: Investigation of Torrefaction Performance

Abstract
Unused sugarcane by-product (bagasse) in Vietnam is an important biomass fuel in the development of the unused renewable fuel power generation system used in this study.The effect of reaction time and residence time on torrefaction product performance was investigated in a laboratory-scale torrefactionfixed-bed reactor (ID = 47.6 mm, height = 500 mm) to confirm the industrial applicability of the torrefaction process using bagasse. To determine the optimal operating parameters, the mass yield, energy yield, and heating value of torrefied products were evaluated. Under the operating conditions of 250°C and 15 min, the sugar cane bagasse torrefied product achieved 4,894 kcal/kg of low heating value, a mass yield of 59.0%, and an energy yield of 70.9%. Additional torrefaction tests were performed in pilot scale reactors (0.1TPD, 250mm-ID) to validate laboratory scale torrefaction performance results in larger scale reactors.The sugar cane bagasse torrefied product achieved a low heating value of 4,810 kcal/kg under operating conditions of 240 °C and 15 min, similar to the laboratory scale test.Accordingly, it was confirmed that the bagasse torrefied product could successfully reach the target performance even under a relatively short residence time (15 min) and reaction temperature (240 to 250°C) operating conditions, not under severe torrefaction conditions.
