Desirable Performance and Improvement of Panel Type Solar Cooker, Its Adoption In Tanzania

Abstract
This study explains the performance of Panel Type Solar Cooker designed followed improvement of the previous Educooker model of the Ashikaga University toward application in Tanzania. This cooker type is one of the most popular due to its simple construction and low-cost materials requirements. Before the experiment, the cooker was simulated by ray tracing technique using software to calculate the concentration and robustness of sun rays in the cooker. The tilt position angle choices on this cooker was installed on a mobile app to help the user choose the best setting position during cooking depending on solar latitude, time of day and season. As one of the results of simulation using aluminum pot painted black with diameter 20cm and height 15cm, the concentration factors revealed from simulations at elevation angle of 55° was 60.5% and compression factor of 6.5 which are both quite high as a panel type solar cooker. In the field study in Tanzania, several cooking experiments conducted to test and prove the performance of the cooker, along with the survey conducted using a questionnaire to assess the solar cooker awareness, acceptance and dissemination merits. The results of the survey indicate that only 8% are well aware of this technology however 81% showed interests in adopting the technology since it’s free and will reduce their cooking expenditure.
