Comparison of Electrocoagulation Process, Electrocoagulation Process/Hydrogen Peroxide and Fenton like Process for Synthetic Textile Wastewater Treatment

Abstract
The objective of this research was to compare the treatment efficiency of electrocoagulationprocess(EC), electrocoagulation/ hydrogen peroxide process and Fenton like process for textile wastewater treatment. The electrocoagulationprocess (EC)done with the current intensity of 4A and initial pH of10. While the process of electrocoagulation/ hydrogen peroxideusing Fe3+ that released from EC process integrated with H2O2 known as Fe3+EC: H2O2. Themole ratios of Fe3+ EC: H2O2 in this experiment were 1:0, 1:0.25, 1:0.5, 1:1, 1:1.5 and 1:2, respectively. The last experiment was Fenton like process that using Fe3+ from FeCl3 reacted with H2O2 atthe mole ratios of Fe3+FeCl3: H2O2 as 1:0, 1:0.25, 1:0.5, 1:1, 1:1.5 and 1:2, respectively. From the experimentalresults found that EC process played an important role in color removal of 90.8%. The enhancement of color removal in electrocoagulation process/ hydrogen peroxide (Fe3+EC: H2O2)was improved. With theincreasing of mole ratios of Fe3+ EC: H2O2 1:0 to 1:2, the color removal showed in the range of 93.9% - 96.9%. Nevertheless, the application of Fenton like process showed less color removal. With the mole ratio of Fe3+FeCl3: H2O2 of 1:1.5 to 1:2, the color removal provided 1.6%and 8.2%, while the other mole ratio did not effective in color removal. For COD removal, three experiments showed the similar results. The COD removal fromthe EC process was 85.5%. While the increasing of mole ratios of Fe3+EC: H2O2 from 1:0 to 1:2, the COD removal dropped from 81.4%to 61.4%. In terms of Fe3+FeCl3: H2O2, with the different mole ratios did not show the significanceof COD removal and showed a similar trend on the decreased of COD removal. The increasing of mole ratios of Fe3+FeCl3: H2O2 from 1:0 to 1:2, the COD removal dropped from 87.6%to 82.8%, respectively. There was something wrong during the settling process from EC experiment, short period of settling time, resulted in 0%of turbidity removal. While the increasing mole ratio of Fe3+EC: H2O2 and Fe3+FeCl3: H2O2 provided better results, moreturbidity removalcould observe. It was in the range of 88.3%to 92.6%forFe3+EC: H2O2 and 99.2%to 99.4%forFe3+FeCl3: H2O2, respectively. In addition, TDS removal and conductivity removal for all experiments did not provide high efficiency due to they were in the dissolved form and mainly mechanisms of all experiments were working specifically for suspended solids removal.
