Hypertension Among Pre-Elderly and Elderly in West Java Province, Indonesia

Abstract
Objective: Hypertension is an important risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, particularly in older people. The aims of the study are to overview of the health and nutritional characteristic among pre-elderly and elderly and to investigate it association with hypertension status in Kebon Kelapa Village, West Java Province, Indonesia. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design and included secondary data from the ‘Cohort Study of Risk Factors for Non-Communicable Diseases’. The study was conducted on people aged ≥45years at KebonKelapa Village-West Java in 2017, and the total sample obtained for analysis was 350 respondents. Conclusion: Prevalence of hypertension in pre-elderly was higher than elderly. Pre-elderly and elderly in both groups hypertension and non-hypertension have similar characteristic, such as most of them are women, have low education level, not smoking, not in stress condition, and doing moderate physical activity. Meanwhile for the BMI characteristic shows different. Hypertension group were mostly obese while those in the non-hypertension group were mostly normal. Factor of smoking habit and high physical activity have a strong relationship to the incidence of hypertension in pre-elderly and elderly population. Keywords- Hypertension, Pre-Elderly, Elderly.
