Efficacy of Thai Botanical Extracts Against to Tomato Mealybug Ferrisia Virgate(Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae)

Abstract
Mealybugs Ferrisiavirgata (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) are the one of the noxious sucking insect pest infesting horticulture crops including tomatoe. Efficacy of botanical extracts of bird ChiliCapsicum frutescens L., garlic, Allium sativum L.,black pepperPiper nigrum L.,and neem,Azadirachtaindicawas investigated on F. virgataat the Entomology Laboratory, Suranaree University of Technology, under temperature of 27 ±2 ◦C, and relative humidity 60 – 70%. The plant extracts at concentrations 0.2, 0.5 and 1 % were applied for tomato and over the mealybugs. Experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design in four replicates. Results showed that the mortalityof F. virgate was highest (100%) at the highest concentration of 1% A. indicaP. nigrumand C. Frutescensextracts at 48 hours. The both three concentrationsat 24 hours after an exposure, A. indica extract had significantly reduced (P<0.05) mealybugs population followed by P. nigrum, C. frutescens and A.sativum.The results obtained reveal that extracts from the three plants are effective in controllingF.virgataand could serve as an alternative to synthetic insecticides.
