Performance Evaluation of Linear Prediction Filter with Artificial Neural Networks on Short Term Wind Speed Prediction

Abstract
Wind is a significant source among the renewables and the electricity generation of a wind turbine is directly related to the wind speed of the region. Therefore, prediction of the wind speeds is a key issue for energy planning. In this study, the performances of the linear prediction filters with the artificial neural networks are evaluated on short term wind speed prediction. For this purpose, the wind speed data collected from the main campus area of the Afyon Kocatepe University in a period of ten minutes are used. A linear prediction filter template and an artificial neural network model with respect to this filter are designed. In both models, measured wind speed values of ten minutes before the prediction are used as input. The experimental results show that, although both methods have advantages over each other, both methods have been successful in prediction of the short-term wind speed.
