Micellar-Enhanced Ultrafiltration For Removal Of Crystal Violet Dye From An Aqueous Solution

Abstract
Micellar Enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) was studied for the removal of crystal violet dye using Cetyl Trimethly Ammonium Bromide (CTAB) as a cationic surfactant via a Polysulphone ultrafiltration membrane. Crystal violet dye prepared at concentrations of 10&25ppm were tested with two different varying concentration of surfactant as 0.00274M and 0.00548M for each of the different membrane having Poly Ethylene glycol(PEG 6000) 5&7.5% by wt. The changes in the dye removal (%R) were analysedon the basis of variation in dye and surfactant concentration for each of the two membranes. Charecterization of membrane was studied prior to ultrafiltration studies for by means of a) Compaction studies, b) Permeability studies and c) Scanning Electron Microscope images of top surface of the membrane. It was observed that dye removal increased with increasing concentration of surfactant and the highest removal was found to be 92% for dye concentration of 25 ppm and surfactant concentration of 0.00584M for membrane having 7.5%PEG by wt. The permeate flux showed a decreasing trend with increasing dye and surfactant concentration because of effects of concentration polarization. The high removal efficiencies obtained at high concentration of surfactant makes MEUF an efficient technique for dye removal and wastewater treatment applications.
