The Stylistic Features of Online News Discourse

Abstract
The purpose of this research is to study distinctive linguistic features of online news discourse. The 1,804 news stories compiled from two well-known news websites in Thailand – Bangkok and The Nation. The instances consist of four types of news stories that are sport news, business news, political news and spot news which are tales of accidents, natural disaster, crimes, protest and demonstration. The discourse perspectives and the corpus approach are applied to analysed the data. The findings reveal that the usage of abbreviated words and structures, noun phrases, headline jargons as well as imperative sentences. In the discourse analysis, the organization of news stories is characterised by the ‘thematic’ structure.
