Paper Title
Study on Curcumin as Ergogenic Aid of Glycogen Re-Synthesis in Exercised Human Skeletal Muscle

Abstract
The present study investigated whether acute curcumin (CUM) supplementation could up-regulate the Akt and GLUT4 expressions, which results enough glycogen storage in exercised human skeletal muscle. Seven recruited male athletes performeda single bout of 60-min cycling exercise at 70 % (VO2 max) and consumed a normal diet (60% carbohydrate, 25 % fat, 15% protein) with either CUM (500 mg, single dosage) or placebo immediately after exercise ina single blind using crossover design. Biopsied muscle samples were obtained from the vastus lateralis immediately (0h) and 3h after exercise. Simultaneously, blood samples and expired gas analysis were collected before and after exercise. The result showed that CUM supplementation immediately after exercise was unable to enhance the glycogen resynthesis in exercised human skeletal muscle. Furthermore, CUM supplementation could not alter the energy reliance on fat /carbohydrate oxidation during the post-exercise period, based on gaseous exchange measurement. Western blot data for Akt and GLUT4 protein expressions in biopsied vastus lateralis were no significant response between CUM and placebo during 3-hour exercise period. We conclude that further additional evidences are necessary to confirm the ergogenic properties of CUM connection with glycogen recovery in exercised human skeletal muscle.
