Evaluation of Machine Vision Features for Separating Between Immature and Mature Sweet Red Peppers

Abstract
Evaluation of machine vision features for separating between immature and mature sweet red peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) is presented. Several color and shape features, extracted from autonomously segmented sweet pepper images, were qualitatively analyzed. Forty images of red sweet peppers (Cultivar: Banji Seed company: Efal) harvested from a commercial greenhouse were acquired in laboratory conditions. Thresholds to separate between immature and mature peppers were empirically selected. Results showed 100% separation between immature and mature fruit using the eccentricity or extent shape features and high performance for several other features. Index Terms - Fruit maturity, Fruit Harvesting, Sweet peppers, Machine vision, Feature analysis.
