Sargassumpolycystumextract Attenuates Dyslipidemia In Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats
Abstract
Sargassumpolycystum contain phlorotannin, a natural compound that classified in polyphenol. Polyphenol have
been known able to decrease blood glucose level on diabetics. High glucose level can induce dyslipidemia on diabetes. The
objective of this study was to evaluate S. polycystum extract on decreasing of the dyslipidemia in diabetic rats. S.
polycystum was obtained from the Talango coastline, Sumenep District, East Java, Indonesia. S. polycystumwas macerated
by methanol (1:3 ; b/v), concentrated, flushed by nitrogen and freeze dried, respectively, to acquire the extract.
Rattusnorvegicus was induced to diabetes animal model by the injection of streptozotocin in intraperitoneal part of rats. The
rats were collected to six groups, i.e.: normal, diabetic, diabetic treated by glyclazide, diabetic treated by 200; 400 and 600
mg/kg body weight of S. polycystum extract, respectively. Blood glucose level of rats were observed each nine days for 45
days. The end of experiment, rats were sacrificed and the blood obtained from aorta. The cholesterol, HDL, LDL and
Triglyceride levels of animalwere analyzed by commercial kits. The result showed that the diabetic groups suffer
hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia. The diabetic rats treated by 600 mg/kg body weight of S. polycystum extract showed the
highest of reducing of blood glucose, cholesterol, LDL and triglyceride levels, respectively, and increasing of HDL level. In
conclusion the 600 mg/kg body weight of S. polycystumextract reduces the dyslipidemia of diabetic and it is potential as
anti-hypercholesterolemic agent on diabetes.
