ENHANCING LEARNING OUTCOMES AND EXPERIENCES THROUGH AN EXTENDED-REALITY MOBILE APP: AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF INTERPRETING CLASSES

Abstract
The evolution of technology not only revolutionizes the practice of interpretation but also its pedagogical approaches. This research aims to create a mobile-assisted language learning application, referred to as "XR MALL", that leverages extended reality (XR) technology and to investigate its impact on learning outcomes and experiences. XR MALL, which consists of fully immersive virtual reality practice and augmented reality functions, was incorporated into English/Chinese interpreting classes as part of a blended learning strategy. Based on a theoretical framework that combines a constructivist approach and an interpreter competence model, a quasi-experimental design was employed in which the control group was exposed to the traditional teaching method, while the experimental group used XR MALL over a semester. The results revealed that the experimental group exhibited significant improvements in their declarative knowledge and practical interpretation skills, compared to the control group. Additionally, the findings also indicated thatXR MALL considerably enhanced students’ learning experiences, as well as their cognitive and affectivedevelopment.
