ACTIVE AND NON-ACTIVE REGION QUANTIFICATION IN A STATIONARY BASKET BIOREACTOR

Abstract
Abstract - External and internal mass transfers of culture medium was studied using a bioreactor with stationary basket beds of immobilized Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells. Specific mathematical models were established in order to indicate the mass transfer of glucose in the liquid boundary layer inside and around the particle. The equations obtained result from combining the substrate mass balance for a single biocatalyst particle with the kinetic model for glucose consumption. In this way, a unitary approach to the mass transfer of the substrate was achieved, in the case of a bioreactor containing immobilized biocatalysts.
