The Big Threat for Printed Newspapers: Economic Challenges, Transition to Digital and The Case of Turkey

Abstract
The rapid progress of technology and the Internet continues every day. This progress affects all sectors and ways of doing business intensively. The media sector is one of the most affected sectors. The advantages of technology and Internet have created many conveniences for the media sector. There are many advantages such as reduced costs, increased speed and multimedia features. However, in addition to the advantages for the journalism sector, which is one of the most important channels of the media sector, it is clearly seen that a very bad economic situation has occurred. Newspapers' sales are declining and the reader is shifting towards digital. For this reason, there has been a significant decrease in sales revenues and newspapers have become very difficult situation in terms of advertising revenues. As a result, some of the newspapers that have been printed have to close down and continue on digital only. In this study, primarily information about communication, new media and social media will be given. Then the decline in newspaper advertising revenue realized in Turkey will be evaluated based on media investments and three closing down newspapers that continue on digital only in Turkey will be examined and analyzed.
