The Practice of Racism and Colorism in South Korean Popular Media: An International Critical Race Analysis

Abstract
South Korean popular media engages in both racism and colorism. This is noted in the blatant appropriation of Black culture and the relentless demeaning of skin tones that are not explicitly pale. Though colorism developed domestically, racism was imported via western institutions. Korea has successful applied the two in concert with one another in order to develop its entertainment industry for global export, subsequently disseminating and reinforcing anti-Blackness. This study analyzes examples in Korean popular media and proposes a solution to address the rampant anti-Blackness of the industry. Keywords - South Korea, Racism, Colorism, Anti-Blackness, Media
