The Impact of Moderate-Fidelity Mannequin Vs Peer Simulated Patient On Nursing Students’ Experience and Level of Competency in Health Assessment Course

Abstract
Background: Simulation in nursing has been the trend as one of the teaching modalities during laboratory session. Contemporaneous, the use of mannequin and peer simulated patient serves as a medium to depict patient in providing necessary competencies in the realm of nursing mainly in Health Assessment course. Aim: To investigate the impact of moderate-fidelity mannequin vs peer simulated patient on nursing students’ experience and level of competency in health assessment course. Method: 80 nursing students enrolled in Health Assessment course at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Science were recruited in the current study; data was collected by questionnaire and competency checklist. Questionnaire was consisted of 2 sections; Section 1: Contained questions related to socio-demographic data of the participant. Section 2: Contained 10 questions related to the participants experience toward moderate fidelity mannequin/peer simulated patient. The second tool is the competency checklist of Thorax and Lung Assessment and Cardiovascular Assessment. Result: The study result showed that the total experience mean score x̄ + SD of students toward moderate fidelity mannequin is 25.18 + 4.01 while the total experience mean score x̄ + SD of students towards peer simulated patient is 32.95 + 2.81. Moreover, the result showed that the total competency mean score x̄ + SD of moderate fidelity mannequin is 9.18 + 1.1, whereas the total competency mean score x̄ + SD of peer simulated patient is 9.87 + 0.34. The study revealed that there was statistically significance difference on the total experience mean score of both groups t=10.039 & P=.000. Besides result also showed a statistically significance difference in the total competency mean score between the group t=3.791 & P=.000. Conclusion:The nursing students’ experience and level of competency regarding the peer simulated patient were higher than moderate-fidelity mannequin in health assessment course.
