An Index To Measure Nationalism In The Formation Of The Malaysian Nation: A Fuzzy Set Approach

Abstract
Nationalism and solidarity became an important agenda in realizing Malaysia to become a developed nation by 2020 due to the multi-ethnic society in Malaysia. In addition, the issues concerning solidarity, between the various ethnicities in Malaysia, have become increasingly sensitive. Hence, the government has stated that one of the major challenges that must be faced in order to achieve Vision 2020 is to create a united Malaysian nation that has the same goal and unwavering loyalty to the nation. However, the level of nationalism within the community cannot be measured accurately because it contains an implicit meaning. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to develop an index to measure nationalism in the formation of the Malaysian nation (bangsa Malaysia) as set out in Vision 2020. The study involves two of the less developed states in Peninsular Malaysia, Pahang and Kelantan. The primary data collection adopted a stratified sampling technique, with several layers of society, based on the socio-economic characteristics of each state, from 100 respondents. A structured interview technique involving a questionnaire was conducted, to qualitatively identify the perception of the community concerning the formation of the Malaysian nation. The data was analyzed using the fuzzy set approach. The results show that the level of nationalism in the residents of Pahang is higher than the residents of Kelantan.
